In my last post this year in the Make It Personal series, I’m sharing a gift idea that is inspired by Denmark. I had a lot of fun transforming a plain piece of wood into something characteristically Danish — a personalised Danish mini chest of drawers.
A little bit of Denmark in your home
I was recently invited to a friend’s housewarming party. My friend and her husband are French and moved to Copenhagen in Denmark a year ago. They are fun-loving people and love living in Denmark. So I was keen to make a gift that reflected their love for Denmark. I chanced upon a little wooden chest of drawers at Søstrene Grene and decided to give it a makeover.
I decided to theme my gift on the Dannebrog (Danish flag) with its cross design and red & white colour combination. The Dannebrog is an intrinsic part of homes in Denmark. The Danish flag weaves its way into celebrations like birthdays in the form of cocktail sticks, stickers and gift wrapping paper!
DIY – how to make a Danish mini chest of drawers
Materials – Here is what you will need:
- A wooden mini chest of drawers
- Gesso primer*
- Acrylic paint and paint brushes
- Wood varnish
* The primer will help the seal the wood. It helps the paint stick to the wood.
First apply two coats of primer on the wood allowing for drying time between coats.
Paint the Danish flag on the two vertical sides of the chest. I used scotch tape to block the area to be painted in white and painted red around it twice. When the red paint is dry, remove the scotch tape and fill in that space with white paint. Use two coats of paint allowing for drying time between coats.
Pull out the two drawers and paint white hearts around the knobs, while painting the rest of the area red.
Vi elsker Danmark
On the top of the drawer chest, write out a Danish phrase and paint something that is related to Denmark. I painted a Viking helmet and wrote “Vi elsker Danmark” which means, “We love Denmark”.
This mini drawer chest makes a perfect box to store jewellery and trinkets.
