Going green: 5 eco-friendly gift ideas

Gift a 'I Love Earth cloth' bag

I recently watched an episode of the reality series ‘Rich Bride, Poor Bride’ in which a couple were planning a green wedding. Right from donating money to save a forest and giving plants as wedding favours to buying locally produced wine and renting a hybrid car — it was all about being eco-friendly and environment conscious.  That got me thinking about green gifts.

So, what can be a green gift?

There are several products masquerading as ‘green and eco-friendly’. Few are so in the true sense. If you want to give a gift that’s eco-friendly, ask yourself these questions: Is it recyclable? Has it been made from sustainable material? Is it biodegradable? Is it natural/chemical-free? If the answer is yes to any of these questions, then you have an authentic green gift.

5 eco-friendly gift ideas

Contrary to popular belief, going green doesn’t always mean spending more. Here are some simple and affordable green gift ideas.

Herb garden: Know someone who likes cooking and prefers to use fresh ingredients? Gift them a mini herb garden with potted herbs like mint, coriander or basil. Choose some perennial herbs and a couple of seasonal ones.

Seed packs: Similar to the herb garden is the seed pack. Choose packs of seeds for vegetables or fruits. This is a great gift for those with a green thumb and one that keeps on giving!

Cloth, jute and recycled paper bags: This is a good gift for those who are conscious about how harmful plastic is to the environment and want to avoid use-and-throw plastic bags. Gift an assortment of cloth, jute and recycled paper bags in different sizes and designs that can be used as shopping bags or as gift bags.

Organic food basket: While most of us like to avoid food sprayed with chemicals, the fact is organic food can be expensive to buy on a daily basis. But it makes for a good green gift idea for those who favour organic food as it is grown without using pesticides and fertilizers. Gift an organic food basket filled with a choice selection of vegetables or fruits.

Organic soap: Who doesn’t use soap? This is a practical and useful gift that can be given to just about anybody. Choose an assortment of soaps made from ingredients like honey, oatmeal, lavender or rose.
